MIGRANT NINJA NOTE –  Seeking job opportunities as a migrant is a daunting task and the sooner you land your first break, the more comfortable the migration process will be for you and your family. Hence it is important to knock on as many doors as possible rather than stick to the usual avenues of advertised jobs when job hunting. However this may be a bit daunting and could work against you if not done right.

The following article will help you in that direction.

For the most part, job seekers tend to reply to advertisements that have been posted in online spaces such as job boards and social media or in the local paper or to jobs they hear of through word of mouth. But have you ever contacted a company ‘cold’? What does ‘cold’ mean in this case you might ask? It means to contact them without having been invited, or in other words, without having seen any advertisements for job vacancies. It is all about being proactive at creating opportunities for yourself and if 2016 is set to be your year, this is what needs to happen!

Reaching out

Traditionally making cold contact with a person or business may have been considered overly forward and may have even been daunting or overwhelming for the job hunter themselves. But these days, with the world so focused on social media, attempting to expand one’s network isn’t necessarily considered as unusual as in years gone by. This doesn’t make it any less scary to reach out to people you may not yet know, but making cold contact means you can personally cherry-pick the companies and people you wish to contact, and potentially end up working for.

How to connect?

The first thing you’ll need to do is make a list of all the people or companies that you’d like to contact. A great way to think about this is to consider who you would ideally like to work for. In your dream job, which company do you see yourself working for? Now, go contact them!

There are a number of avenues available when it comes to making the contact. You might like to write a letter or make a phone call, or alternatively you could send a social media invitation such as that available on LinkedIn. Whichever method you choose, it’s important that you’re prepared.

How to prepare?

What you say and how you say it will go a long way to helping you make successful contact.

If you’ve selected a company to contact, go out of your way to identify the correct person you need to address your correspondence to. Call the company and ask for the name of their Hiring Manager or their Director, or whomever is appropriate depending on the size of the business.

Introduce yourself as succinctly as possible and clearly state your reasons for reaching out. Don’t be tempted to include too much information, as undoubtedly the person you’re contacting is busy. Do mention why you’ve chosen them in particular, either the company or the person. For example “I’m writing to you today because XYZ company is one that is inspirational because of its global success” (insert your own line here!). Thank the person for their time and include information about how you can be contacted, such as your phone number and email address.

The next step after initiating cold contact is making sure you have an outstanding resume ready to send and this is something we can help you with. Please contact us today to discuss options for designing a new resume, or refreshing an existing one.
